Greece’s strategic role in safeguarding religious freedoms and the protection of religious minorities have been highlighted by Deputy Foreign Minister Konstantinos Vlasis at the National Prayer Breakfast held in Washington.
During the event, Konstantinos Vlasis met US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, stressing the need for pressure to be exerted to ensure that the rights of the Ecumenical Patriarchate will be respected.
“I thanked Mike Pompeo for his support in Greece and for the letter he sent to the prime minister. Both sides confirmed that the relations were at the highest level they have ever been. I reiterated our position in favor of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the role it played, noting that there must be pressure so that the Halki seminary re-opens. In addition, I stressed that the other Patriarchates in the eastern Mediterranean should also be supported, because if we do not embrace them, we will also lose these last pockets of Christianity in these areas,” the deputy minister noted.
