Two hundred years since the Greek Revolution of 1821 and exactly one hundred and sixty-five years since the inauguration of the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin of the Greek Community of Alexandria were celebrated by the Greek Community of Alexandria on the great double feast of Orthodoxy and the Nation.
The Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria, Metropolitan Narcissus of Naucratis, connected and “united” the two great hymns of Greece: the Greek anthem with the Hymn to Panagia, the Akathist Hymn, stressing how inextricably linked Greece and Orthodoxy are.
He conveyed the paternal wishes of Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria and All Africa, in the presence of Bishop Germanos of Tamiatheus and the clergy.
The Consul General, Athanasios Kotsionis, delivered the greeting of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, to the members of the Greek community as reported by ekalexandria.org.
Characteristic is the moment when the two national anthems, that of Greece and of Egypt, were chanted by those present and the laying of wreaths at the monument of the fallen by Consul General Athanasios Kotsionis and First Vice President of the Greek community of Alexandria Andreas Vafiadis.
