The Greek Embassy in Bucharest is on full alert following the fatal road accident in Romania that claimed the lives of Greek PAOK supporters, as stated by Greek Ambassador Lili Grammatikas, who is currently in Timișoara and has visited the injured fans hospitalized there.
The ambassador emphasized that the top priorities are the swift completion of procedures for the repatriation of the victims’ remains, as well as the medical care and safe transfer of the injured back to Greece. She also underlined the excellent cooperation with the Romanian authorities at all levels, from the very first moment.
“Unfortunately, seven people were killed instantly in this accident and three were injured. Two are more seriously injured but remain in stable condition with an optimistic prognosis, while the third is in much better condition and is also under observation,” the Greek ambassador stated.
She stressed that the embassy was mobilized immediately after the incident: “Since yesterday afternoon, a delegation from the embassy was present at the scene, and I arrived later in the evening. I must strongly highlight the assistance and outstanding cooperation provided by the Romanian authorities from the very first moment, at ministerial level, at the highest institutional level, and on the ground.”
Regarding the investigation into the causes of the accident, Ambassador Grammatikas noted that it is ongoing and being handled by the competent authorities. “The causes of the accident are under investigation,” she said, adding that the immediate concern for the Greek side is the completion of all necessary procedures for the rapid repatriation of the seven victims. She also noted that some family members have already arrived or are on their way to Romania.
At the same time, she referred to the condition of the injured and the planning for their return to Greece, stressing that the repatriation will take place under the best possible conditions. She confirmed that all injured fans are in stable condition, and even the most seriously injured, whom she personally visited, is showing encouraging signs, despite the severity of the injuries.
Concluding her statement, the ambassador conveyed the condolences of the entire Greek Embassy to the families of the victims and referred to the international expressions of solidarity, highlighting the profound human impact of the tragedy.
