A possible decision on the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque by the Turkish government would lead to an extremely significant escalation in Greek-Turkish relations including in terms of symbolism, Alternate Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis said today in an interview with SKAI TV station.
In particular, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis noted that such a move “will send a signal that Turkey is taking a Muslim and Islamic course,” thus abandoning a course of alignment with the Western values, culture and multicultural society that Turkey has pursued for more than 100 years.
According to the alternate minister, the interventions of international actors, such as that of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, highlight the general dangers of this decision.
