French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have both confirmed their attendance at the funeral of Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88.
“We will be at the Pope’s funeral, as we should,” stated President Macron during his visit to Réunion Island. The Ukrainian Presidency also confirmed preparations are underway for President Zelensky to travel to Rome, awaiting the final funeral details.
According to the Vatican, the funeral will take place on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. local time in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City.
In addition, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will be present at the ceremony, her office announced today.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife Melania have also confirmed their attendance. Argentine President Javier Milei, from the homeland of Pope Francis, and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva are among other heads of state expected to be present.
In contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated today: “No, the President has no such plans,” when asked whether Putin would travel to the Vatican for the funeral.
The funeral of Pope Francis, known globally for his humility, compassion, and dedication to peace and interreligious dialogue, is expected to be a major international event attended by leaders from across the political and religious spectrum.
