“This playing with fire must not be repeated. As a NATO partner, Turkey “has a clear obligation to resolve even difficult disputes through negotiation, with respect for international law, and not to compromise peace in the region,” said Foreign Minister Haiko Maas, shortly before his departure for Ankara, where he will meet later today his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, in order to encourage him, as he said, “resolutely continue and perpetuate the constructive course of recent weeks.”
“In EU-Turkey relations we have left behind a difficult year. The situation in the eastern Mediterranean has escalated dramatically in some cases. This playing with fire must not be repeated. As a NATO partner, Turkey has a clear obligation to sort out even difficult disputes in negotiations, observing international law, and not to endanger peace in the region.”
