French President Emmanuel Macron, accompanied by his host, President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović, visited the historic Cetinje Monastery, where they were welcomed by Metropolitan Joanikije of Montenegro and the Littoral.
During the visit, Metropolitan Joanikije introduced President Macron and his delegation to the rich history of the Cetinje Monastery and the sacred relics preserved within one of Montenegro’s most important spiritual and cultural landmarks.
A reception was subsequently held at the headquarters of the Metropolis, where the participants engaged in cordial and constructive discussions on a range of contemporary issues. President Macron outlined the purpose of his visit to Montenegro and spoke about the opportunities and prospects that lie ahead for the country within the framework of European Union membership.
Metropolitan Joanikije welcomed the distinguished guests and emphasized the significance of the French President’s visit to Montenegro. He spoke about the mission, cultural activities, and spiritual work of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral, highlighting the centuries-long contribution of the Serbian Orthodox Church to the preservation and development of the region’s Christian and cultural heritage.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to reflect on the longstanding historical ties between the peoples of France and Montenegro. The participants recalled the friendship and alliance forged during the First and Second World Wars, which continue to serve as a strong foundation for future relations. Metropolitan Joanikije also noted that many Montenegrin rulers, military leaders, writers, and church figures received their education at renowned French universities.
Speaking about his distinguished predecessors, whose role was instrumental in shaping the history of Montenegro, the Metropolitan expressed his conviction that Montenegro has much to contribute to contemporary Europe in both cultural and spiritual terms. He stressed that the values of freedom, honor, dignity, and Christian self-sacrifice have long characterized the Montenegrin people and remain essential foundations for society.
At the conclusion of the meeting, President Macron thanked Metropolitan Joanikije for the warm welcome and fruitful conversation. As a commemorative gift marking the occasion, the Metropolitan presented the French President with a replica of an early Christian liturgical diskos known as the “Podgorica Cup,” a relic discovered at the archaeological site of Duklja and currently preserved in the renowned Hermitage Museum.
The visit underscored the enduring cultural, historical, and spiritual connections between Montenegro and France while highlighting the important role of religious and cultural heritage in fostering dialogue and mutual understanding.
