Former Metropolitan of Paphos Tychikos has been hospitalized in Athens, according to a video posted online featuring his spiritual father and physician, Fr. Evangelos Papanikolaou.
In the video, Fr. Evangelos explained that Tychikos was first admitted to the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center and later transferred to another hospital in Athens, where he continues to receive medical care.
“Since the day we returned from Constantinople, the Bishop had some difficulties. He was already ill before the trip, and the doctors had advised him not to go,” Fr. Evangelos said.
He described this period as “a great trial” both for Metropolitan Tychikos personally and for the Church of Cyprus, asking the faithful to keep him in their prayers.
Metropolitan Tychikos, speaking briefly from his hospital bed, expressed his gratitude and offered words of faith and encouragement:
“I thank Father Evangelos for his support and send my blessings to Paphos and all of Cyprus. Please pray that this trial will pass and that better days may come for our Church.”
According to philenews, the health issue reportedly began before his departure for the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
Regarding the profession of faith requested by the Holy Synod, sources cited by the same outlet note that Metropolitan Tychikos believes he has already fulfilled this obligation, having sent a written statement affirming his acceptance of all the decisions of the Ecumenical Councils, and therefore does not consider it necessary to sign any additional document.
