Former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Athens to discuss international developments, religious diplomacy, and environmental protection during the Patriarch’s visit to the Greek capital.
According to sources close to Tsipras, the former premier congratulated the Ecumenical Patriarch on his historic address to the Hellenic Parliament and recalled their close cooperation during his term in office. Their discussion focused on ongoing conflicts and geopolitical tensions in Gaza, Ukraine, Iran, and Lebanon.
Tsipras emphasized that both the political Left and the Church share common humanitarian values, particularly regarding the protection of vulnerable communities and solidarity with those in need. He also highlighted the importance of interfaith dialogue, referring to international conferences held in 2015 and 2017 that promoted religious and cultural pluralism, peaceful coexistence, and regional stability in the Middle East.
The former prime minister also recalled his landmark visit to the Halki Theological School and pledged to visit the Ecumenical Patriarchate again soon.
