The Orthodox Community of Smyrna welcomed the New Year with the celebration of the services in accordance with the Typikon of the Orthodox Church.
Metropolitan Varthalomaios of Smyrna performed the holy services.
Due to the three-day ban on non-essential transport and movement from 9 p.m. of the 31st December 2020 until 5 a.m. on Monday, the 4th January 2021, in order to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the holy services were performed on the afternoon of the 31st of December.
The Metropolitan performed the Divine Liturgy and, after the Dismissal, the Doxology service for the New Year. He also blessed the Vasilopita and little Nicholas Ürek was the one who found the hidden coin in his piece.
A short festive reception was held in the courtyard of the Church of Saint Foteini by observing the measures of social distancing.
