On Sunday, November 22, 2020, Metropolitan Athenagoras of Belgium and Exarch of the Netherlands and Luxembourg officiated at the historic Parish of St. Catherine Amsterdam (Zaandam), observing all required measures against the spread of Covid-19.
The Metropolitan of Belgium in his sermon referred to the Gospel reading in which Jesus Christ criticized the foolish rich man for his egocentrism and greed but also for his inhuman behavior towards his neighbor, which eventually led him to confinement in his misery of greed.
At the end of the Divine Liturgy, Metropolitan Athenagoras, expressed his joy that it was possible to perform the Divine Liturgy, even with the minimal participation of parishioners, especially young people, although the situation due to Covid-19 is particularly sad, and wished that humanity will overcome the serious threat of Covid-19 quickly and that everything will be back to normal so that the Divine Liturgy will be finally performed without any restrictions.
He also thanked the Hierarchal Proistamenos of this historic Parish and all those who contribute to the completion of the works that are done in the church. In particular, however, he commemorated, as he always does, the Great Benefactors, who have greatly assisted both in the acquisition and in the necessary work that is being done in the temple, wishing to be completed soon with the help of all.
