Relatives, friends, colleagues, and students gathered today in Thessaloniki to bid a final farewell to Professor of Dogmatic and Symbolic Theology and former Dean of the Faculty of Theology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Chrysostomos Stamoulis, who passed away suddenly at the age of 61, leaving the academic and ecclesiastical community in deep mourning.
The funeral service was held at noon at the Church of Saint Sophia in the city center, attended by Metropolitan Philotheos of Thessaloniki, Metropolitan Barnabas of Neapolis and Stavroupolis, and Metropolitan Justinos of Nea Krini and Kalamaria, along with a large congregation.
Metropolitan Philotheos conveyed to Stamoulis’ family the condolences of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, praising the professor’s “immense steps forward, taken with love for the Church and the world.” He added, “He authentically loved the Church and never separated himself from it.”
Emotional eulogies highlighted Stamoulis’ academic journey and personal legacy. Among those who spoke were Deputy Minister of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports Nikos Papaioannou, AUTH Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Development Nikos Maggiores, Dean of the Faculty of Theology Athanasios Gkikas, and others.
