European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the European Union’s solidarity with its member states following a security incident involving an unmanned aerial vehicle near the British military base in Akrotiri, Cyprus.
In a statement issued after a telephone conversation with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, von der Leyen addressed the incident that occurred shortly after midnight, when a drone targeted the British base at Akrotiri.
According to her post, the President of the European Commission stressed that although the Republic of Cyprus was not the direct target of the attack, the event raises serious concerns at the level of European security.
“I talked with President Christodulides who briefed me on the single incident that occurred shortly after midnight involving an unmanned aerial vehicle targeting the British base in Akrotiri,” von der Leyen said in a statement posted.
She stressed the broader implications of the event, emphasizing the EU’s united stance in the face of potential threats. “While the Republic of Cyprus was not the target, let me be clear: we stand collectively, firmly and unequivocally with our Member States in the face of any threat,” she concluded.
