The European Union welcomed today the release of Israeli hostages by Hamas, describing it as a “critical step toward peace” and praising U.S. President Donald Trump’s role in the breakthrough.
“The return of the Israeli hostages is a moment of joy for the families and a moment of relief for the entire world,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
She added that the EU is ready to contribute to the success of the peace plan for Gaza, “with all the tools at our disposal — specifically by supporting governance and reform of the Palestinian Authority,” highlighting that European funds are being mobilized to aid the reconstruction of the region.
Echoing her statement, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas said on X: “The release of the hostages is a significant diplomatic achievement and a crucial step toward peace. President Trump made this progress possible.”
