A new confrontation between Europe and Turkey has erupted, following the verbal attacks on French President Εmannuel Macron by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and calls for a boycott of French products in the Arab world.
Turkey should not interfere in France’s internal affairs, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said today after Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan called for a boycott of French products in response to what he called the “anti-Islamic” agenda of President Emmanuel Macron.
“It should shock each one of us that foreign powers are meddling with what is going on in France,” Gérald Darmanin told France Inter radio, adding that he was referring to Turkey and Pakistan. The Pakistani Parliament has passed a resolution calling on the government to recall the Pakistani ambassador in Paris.
The President of the European Parliament described the attacks of Tayyip Erdogan on France and Emmanuel Macron as “unacceptable” in a post on Twitter.
David Sassoli calls on Turkey to “end this dangerous confrontation.”
In particular, David Sassoli says: “President Erdogan’s attacks on France and President Macron are unacceptable. The European Parliament stands in solidarity with the French people and with freedom of expression. I urge Turkey to end this dangerous confrontation.”

In a post on Twitter, the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, described as “unacceptable” the words of Tayyip Erdogan about Emmanuel Macron, while the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, stressed in a post on Twitter: “Rather than a positive agenda, Turkey chooses provocations, unilateral actions in the Mediterranean and now insults. It’s intolerable. Respect for Europe and its Member States.”
Plutôt qu'un agenda positif la Turquie choisit les provocations, les actions unilatérales en Méditerranée et maintenant les injures.
C’est intolérable.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his full support for French President Emmanuel Macron.
In particular, the Greek prime minister states: “Personal insults against President Macron and hate speech targeting France by the Turkish leadership is unacceptable, fuels religious hatred and undermines peaceful coexistence. Full support and solidarity to Emmanuel Macron and the French people, still mourning a heinous crime.”
