Estonian Orthodox Church strengthens autonomy from Moscow Patriarchate

Estonian Orthodox Church strengthens autonomy from Moscow Patriarchate

The second plenary session of the Estonian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate took place under the chairmanship of Metropolitan of Tallinn and All Estonia. It focused on measures to enhance the Church’s independence from the Russian Church. This meeting followed negotiations with the Estonian state that concluded in late July.

According to reports from et.orthodox.ee, the plenary session resulted in the adoption of a revised statute that solidifies the Church’s autonomy from the Moscow Patriarchate in areas such as administrative, economic, educational, and civil affairs. In a significant move, the Church’s name was officially changed to the “Estonian Orthodox Church,” a title granted by a document from Patriarch Alexios II.

The plenary also endorsed the Synod’s role in the negotiation process with the state and expressed optimism that the Estonian Orthodox Church will find effective ways to resolve the ongoing ecclesiastical issues. The Plenary decided to continue its efforts and authorized the Session to convene again if necessary.

Additionally, the Council highlighted the importance of the 33rd anniversary of Estonia’s restored independence, offering prayers for the country’s prosperity, cultural preservation, and continued freedom as a sovereign state.

It is worth noting that the Estonian Ministry of Interior and the Estonian Orthodox Church (EOC) reached an agreement aimed at reducing and eventually eliminating the influence of the Moscow Patriarchate over the EOC.
