Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made some new statements on Hagia Sophia and Soumela Monastery according to which the decision to change the status of Hagia Sophia was a turning point in a horrible decade.
“In fact, our nation received good news from our Lord in these painful days that we have been struggling with the coronavirus pandemic. We are delighted to restore Hagia Sophia to its original identity, ” he stressed, as reported by the Anadolu agency.
He added that the decision to open Hagia Sophia was simply a turning point in a horrible decade. The Turkish president also referred to the Soumela Monastery: “Turkey has shown that it respects religious freedoms since we have taken some steps [in that direction].”
President Erdoğan also referred to some other, as he said, “good news”. In particular, he spoke of the gas reserves that the country discovered in the Black Sea. He also hoped that the drilling operations in the Eastern Mediterranean region would also bring such good news.
Earlier, the Turkish minister of defence had proceeded to a new delirium demanding the Greek army to withdraw from 16 Greek islands for the umpteenth time.
Addressing the annual special meeting at the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Hulusi Akar made extensive reference to the domestic war industry, the national and international exercises and then verbally attacked Greece.
Hulusi Akar said “Greece must proceed with the demilitarization of 16 islands”; while he stated that our country is provoking Ankara, as politicians and the military visit these islands.
Continuing the inflammatory statements, Akar claimed that Athens is afraid of dialogue with Ankara because it knows that Turkey is right. Finally, he stated that “Greece’s demands to the European Union are selfish and preposterous.”
