The enthronement ceremony of Bishop Niphon of Mahajanga and Northern Madagascar took place with great solemnity and deep reverence on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the Church of Saint Nicholas Church of Mahajanga. The event marked an important milestone for the Orthodox Church in Madagascar and for the continuing development of missionary work in the region.
The enthronement was presided over by Metropolitan Ignatios of Antananarivo, concelebrating with Bishop Prodromos of Toliara. The ceremony was attended by clergy, faithful, and collaborators of the local missionary community.
In a statement shared on social media, the Metropolis of Toliara and Southern Madagascar expressed joy and emotion at the enthronement of the new bishop, describing the occasion as a moment of hope for the future of Orthodoxy in Madagascar and for the continued growth of missionary activity in this challenging yet blessed land.
The announcement also emphasized that the establishment of the new episcopal see reflects the pastoral care and missionary vision of Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa. The creation of the new diocese was presented as another sign of his commitment to strengthening the Orthodox mission across the African continent and spreading the light of the Gospel throughout the region.
The Metropolis extended its prayers and wishes for Bishop Niphon, asking that God bless his episcopal ministry so that he may become a spiritual father for the people of the region, a support for the poor, a source of hope for children, and a comfort for those facing hardships.
In Africa, where many communities struggle with poverty and the difficulties of daily life, the Church’s presence is described as an embrace of love and hope. The newly enthroned bishop is called to keep this embrace open to all, offering spiritual guidance, compassion, and support to those in need.
