The distinguished associate professor at the Law School of the Democritus University of Thrace, Ioannis Ktistakis, is the new Greek judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
The new Greek judge since 2009 had taken over as head of the legal advisers of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He has won 53 cases before the ECHR (Strasbourg), including the 2008 unanimous decision, that vindicated the Ecumenical Patriarchate against Turkey over the historic building of the Prinkipo Greek Orphanage and the right of ownership of the Patriarchate. In execution of the decision, Ankara handed over the ownership title of the Orphanage building.
Ioannis Ktistakis taught at the Bosporus University in Constantinople, while in recent years Ankara has banned him from entering Turkey. Also last August, with his legal advice, a Turkish lawyer filed a lawsuit on behalf of Turkish citizens to the State Council of Turkey for annulment of Tayyip Erdogan’s decisions to turn the Hagia Sophia and the Chora Church in Constantinople into mosques.
Ktistakis having obtained an absolute majority of votes cast -145 votes – by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is elected judge of the European Court of Human Rights.
Particularly the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) announced, “Ktistakis, having obtained an absolute majority of votes cast, is elected judge of the European Court of Human Rights for a term of office of nine years which shall commence no later than three months after his election”.
