The Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate examined the possibilities for the utilization of the premises of the Prinkipo Orphanage on Tuesday, June 3, during its final regular session for the month, following a detailed briefing by Archon Grand Chartophylax of the Great Church of Christ and community leader Mr. Panteleimon Vigas.
As stated in the related announcement of the Ecumenical Patriarchate: “Following numerous unsuccessful efforts to secure funding for the restoration of the wooden building complex of the Orphanage – which, after its forced closure in the 1960s, was left to the wear of time and suffered extensive damage – the Patriarch and the Synodal Hierarchs, after reviewing a study commissioned by the Patriarchate, unanimously decided to expedite the necessary actions to develop ecotourism activities on the site, fully harmonized with the environment and architectural character of the Princes’ Islands. The decision was made with respect for the historical legacy of the Greek Orphanage, which over time served the needs of the Rum (Greek Orthodox) Community, and with a view to the sustainable development of the island complex of the Sea of Marmara.
The next steps toward implementing this decision will be carried out immediately by a special Committee appointed by the Ecumenical Patriarchate.”
