From November 5 to 7, 2024, the Ecumenical Patriarchate hosts an international conference in memory of the renowned theologian, Metropolitan John D. Zizioulas of Pergamon, at the Grand Hyatt Istanbul Hotel.
This significant event is organized in collaboration with the Volos Academy for Theological Studies and the Center for Orthodox Christian Studies at Fordham University, USA.
With the blessing of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the conference aims to celebrate Metropolitan Zizioulas’s profound impact on Orthodox theology and his ecumenical vision.
The conference seeks to highlight the global influence of Metropolitan Zizioulas’s work, with contributions spanning decades and inspiring countless studies and doctoral theses. It is noted that his contributions have become foundational in theological scholarship, with references to his work appearing in most serious theological publications worldwide.
Prominent theologians, scholars, and religious leaders from around the world will address themes central to Zizioulas’s legacy, including ecclesiology, theology, and ecumenism. Key speakers include Protopresbyter Prof. Dr. Dimitrios Linos (Athens Medical School), Prof. Dr. Aristotle Papanikolaou (Fordham University, USA), Rev. Hieromonk Dr. Nicholas Sakharov (Monastery of Saint John the Baptist, Essex, UK), Prof. Emeritus Paschalis Kitromilides (University of Athens), and Prof. Dr. Stylianos Tsompanidis (University of Thessaloniki, Greece). His All-Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew will deliver the keynote lecture.
Other distinguished guests include Metropolitan Emmanuel of Chalcedon, Bishop Maxim of Los Angeles (Serbian Patriarchate), and representatives from various Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant traditions.
