The Deputy Secretary of State of the United States of America, Wendy R. Sherman visited the Ecumenical Patriarchate today, Saturday, May 29, 2021.
The deputy state secretary, who was accompanied by the US Ambassador to Ankara, David Satterfield, and her associates, were welcomed by Grand Protosyncellus Theodoros, the Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod, Archimandrite Grigorios, and Grand Syncellus Iakovos. The deputy state secretary, the US ambassador and the associates then visited the Cathedral of Saint Georgios.
Afterwards, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew welcome Wendy R. Sherman, who expressed his pleasure for her visit.
During the meeting, they discussed issues of common interest and made reference to Ecumenical Patriarch’s previous visits to the USA, also speaking about his forthcoming visit to the USA in October.
In addition, the Ecumenical Patriarch presented the priorities and activities of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which, among other things, aim at world peace. Finally, the Ecumenical Patriarch sent his wishes to the deputy state secretary for a safe and constructive tour from Turkey to the countries of the Far East.
On her part, the deputy state secretary spoke about US interest in religious freedoms around the world and its respect for the historic institution of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and its international role.
