Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I met with U.S. Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle in Athens as part of his official visit to the Greek capital.
According to a statement shared by the U.S. Embassy on social media, the meeting focused on the longstanding spiritual and cultural ties between the United States and Greece, as well as issues related to religious freedom and the protection of religious communities in the wider region.
“The enduring spiritual and cultural ties between the United States and Greece were at the center of Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle’s meeting in Athens with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I,” the embassy stated.
The post further emphasized Washington’s commitment to religious liberty, noting that “the United States remains committed to promoting religious freedom and protecting religious communities across the region.”
The embassy also praised the global role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, stating that “the spiritual leadership of the Ecumenical Patriarchate continues to inspire service, faith, and purpose around the world.”
The meeting took place during Patriarch Bartholomew’s multi-day visit to Athens, which has included meetings with political leaders, participation in official ceremonies, and public addresses focused on peace, dialogue, and the mission of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
