Ecumenical Patriarch: Granting of autocephaly to Church of Ukraine preserves unity within Orthodoxy

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew delivered a speech at the official dinner held in his honor by the Holy Archdiocese of Australia at the Centre Peace in Melbourne on Monday, October 14, 2024. In his address, the Patriarch emphasized the unique blessings enjoyed by the people of Australia, where political and religious freedom are foundational realities. He praised the country’s commitment to human rights, the safety, and well-being of its citizens, presenting Australian society as an exemplary model of freedom and progress.

Despite this optimistic portrayal, the Patriarch expressed deep sorrow over the persistence of global conflicts, highlighting how nationalism, cultural and religious differences, geopolitical interests, and economic greed continue to fuel divisions worldwide. He lamented the dehumanization that occurs in these conflicts, pointing out that the most vulnerable members of society, particularly women and children, bear the brunt of such strife.

Addressing representatives from other Churches and religious groups present, he urged the global Christian community to stand in solidarity, raising its voice against wars, violence, and injustice. Acknowledging that the influence of religious leaders may be diminished by internal divisions within Christianity and even within the Orthodox Church, the Patriarch underscored the importance of unity, echoing the command of Christ for love and togetherness among the faithful.

He also stressed the necessity of dialogue as the sole path to reconciliation and peace, recognizing the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s leading role in fostering inter-Christian and interfaith dialogue. The Patriarch pointed to the granting of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine as a crucial move for preserving unity within Orthodoxy.

In his closing remarks, Patriarch Bartholomew expressed his gratitude and admiration for the achievements of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia. He bestowed his blessings upon Archbishop Makarios for his tireless work and encouraged the faithful to continue supporting and remaining loyal to the Mother Church of Constantinople.
