Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has made a heartfelt appeal for global peace on the eve of the scheduled meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The Ecumenical Patriarch delivered his message from his birthplace of Imbros, where he is attending celebrations for the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos.
Speaking to the faithful after the Vespers service, the Ecumenical Patriarch urged an end to wars and bloodshed, emphasizing that humanity can coexist without conflict. “There is room for everyone,” he said. “We do not need to kill each other to fit.”
The Ecumenical Patriarch continued: “Lord, have mercy on us and on the world. Enlighten the great ones who meet tomorrow in Alaska, that they may bring peace to the world, end the murderous wars, stop the bloodshed, allow reason to prevail, and let justice and mutual respect reign.
In this beautiful and blessed world, as created by the all-wise and almighty God, there is room for all. Our Church says, ‘Peace be unto all.’ Grant us, Lord, Your peace, which surpasses all understanding.”
Patriarch Bartholomew will return to Constantinople from Imbros on August 20. Between August 21–27, he is scheduled to visit Sweden and Italy to fulfill prior commitments.
