On Thursday, October 17, the faithful of the Parish of Saints Constantine and Helen in South Yarra, Melbourne, joyfully welcomed Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Accompanied by Archbishop Makarios of Australia and his esteemed entourage, the Patriarch was greeted with words of reverence and devotion by Fr. Panteleimon Laskaris, who emphasized the enduring spiritual support the local community has received from the Ecumenical Patriarchate since the church’s founding in the 1960s.
Following the service, the Patriarch visited the parish hall to meet volunteers of the charity program “Five Loaves,” learning more about its impactful work from Bishop Kyriakos of Melbourne. He expressed paternal satisfaction with the program, praising its inclusivity in offering essential aid to all, regardless of background or belief. “The Church always offers its help and assistance indiscriminately,” the Patriarch remarked, underscoring the message of the Good Samaritan.
Metropolitan Kyrillos of Imbros and Tenedos also shared his admiration, speaking about the Greek Diaspora’s resilience, love for Christ, and dedication to helping those in need. He highlighted that a heart filled with love for Christ can extend this love to others, noting the importance of such selfless service.
This visit, filled with deep spiritual significance and messages of charity, further demonstrated the close bonds between the local Greek Orthodox community and the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
