Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew arrived this afternoon at the port of Chios to attend and speak at a conference dedicated to climate change, organized by the Region of North Aegean as part of the 3rd Chios Festival.
The Patriarch was warmly welcomed by Konstantinos Moutzouris, the Regional Governor of the North Aegean, along with representatives from the political and military authorities. According to alitheia.gr, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew expressed his gratitude to the Archbishop of Athens, the Metropolitan of Chios, the Regional Governor, and the authorities for their invitation, as well as to P. Tsakos, an Archon of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
Students from the Naval High School participated as crew members on the boat MANIA, which transported the Patriarch and his entourage from Cesme to the port of Chios on Thursday afternoon. Upon arrival, a military contingent awaited the Patriarch at the waterfront, in accordance with the protocol for the reception of a Head of State. The Patriarch paid his respects before the national flag while the Greek National Anthem was played.
Following the official reception, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew greeted the attending authorities and the Holy Clergy of Chios before proceeding with the rest of his schedule.
On Friday, September 6, the Ecumenical Patriarch will visit the Regional Unit of Chios headquarters, where he will receive a commemorative gift from the Regional Governor during a special meeting of the Regional Council.
The afternoon will feature the climate change conference, with notable speakers including Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, former President of the Hellenic Republic Professor Prokopis Pavlopoulos, and Christos Zerefos, Secretary General of the Academy of Athens.
Following the conference, Patriarch Bartholomew will visit the Library of the Holy Metropolis of Chios, “Saint Agapitos,” where he will be honored as the honorary president of the Library.
