Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew visited the historic Church of Saint Charalambos in Çeşme, in the Asia Minor, which lies across the Greek island of Chios. The celebration of the Divine Liturgy took place at the church, which is considered a monument, following the permission granted to the Ecumenical Patriarchate by the Turkish authorities.
The church, currently used by the municipality of Çeşme as an events venue, operated as a church again in February 2016 since the Asia Minor catastrophe. The church was built in 1832 and it is following the three-aisled basilica style. It has been the seat of the Metropolis of Krini (“Çeşme” in Turkish) since its establishment in 1903. Until then, it was originally a parish seat in the Metropolis of Ephesus and later a Diocese seat within the same Metropolis.
