Easter at the Patriarchate of Alexandria

The Orthodox Christians of Alexandria celebrated the Resurrection of the Lord at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Alexandria.

Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa presided over the service of the Resurrection and the Resurrection Divine Liturgy, conveying to all the joyful message, “Christ is Risen!”

The Patriarch was accompanied by the Supreme Secretary of the Holy Synod, Metropolitan Panteleimon of Naucratis, and Bishop Nicodemos of Neiloupolis.

The Patriarch, in his Resurrection Message, stressed the following: “Brothers and dear children, the message of the life-bringing Resurrection is not a mere expectation of the future, but a way of life, which already begins in this world. Our Church calls us already now to live as resurrected people. It asks us to be crucified with Christ and to be resurrected with Him. To give up the old man and live as new men, men of grace!”

At the top celebration of Christianity in Alexandria, Greece was represented by the Consul General, Athanasios Kotsionis, while the Greek Community of Alexandria was represented by the First Vice President of the Hellenic Community of Alexandria, Andreas Vafiadis. The captain of the Alexandria Yacht Club, Konstantinos Varouxis, and the President of the Association of Greek Scientists “Ptolemy I” and of the Yacht Club, Mrs. Lilika Thlivitou were also present.

On Easter Sunday, April 24, 2022, the solemn Vespers of the Resurrection was held at the Patriarchal Monastery of St. Savvas the Sanctified in Alexandria. Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa came in procession from the Throne Hall of the Monastery to the Patriarchal Church of St. Savvas, where he presided over the Vespers of Love, accompanied by the Archpriests of the Throne, Metropolitan Panteleimon of Nafcratis, Bishop Germanos of Tamiathis and Bishop Nicodemos of Neiloupolis.

The Vice President of the Greek Community of Alexandria, Andreas Vafiadis, and representatives of Greek associations of the city also attended. In a joyful atmosphere, the Holy Gospel was read by the Patriarch in Greek, followed by the Archpriests, the clergy, and the laity in various languages.

The Patriarch, after thanking the representatives of the Greek community, the representatives of the Greek state in Egypt, and all the faithful for their presence, said:

“My blessed children, I say to you, then, aloud:

Rejoice!

Rejoice! because Hades has come down and the devil’s state has been defeated.

Rejoice! because through the wood of the cross the wood of disobedience is abolished.

Rejoice! because the unresolvable curse becomes a real joy.

Rejoice in the name of Christ Resurrected and let us all together say loudly: CHRIST IS RISEN!”
