U.S. President Donald Trump reacted to the election of the new Pope, Leo XIV, on his social media platform Truth Social, expressing pride in the historic moment.
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope,” Trump wrote. “It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”
Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Prevost, was elected on May 8 by the College of Cardinals, becoming the 267th pontiff and the first from the United States to lead the Roman Catholic Church.
