With ecclesiastical grandeur and deep spiritual emotion, the memory of Saint Arsenios the Cappadocian was celebrated at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Footscray.
The Great Festive Hierarchical Vespers were held on Sunday, November 9, and the Matins and Hierarchical Divine Liturgy were celebrated on Monday, November 10. Bishop Eumenios of Chora presided over the services, representing Archbishop Makarios of Australia. Archbishop Makarios sent his paternal blessing and heartfelt wishes to the celebrating community.
In his sermon, the Bishop spoke emotionally and profoundly about the saint’s spiritual message, emphasizing that Saint Arsenios “was not just a miracle-working priest, but a man who learned to hide himself so that God could be revealed.” The Bishop highlighted that true holiness does not seek recognition but works silently within people’s hearts.
The Bishop also linked Saint Arsenios with Saint Paisios the Athonite. As a child, Saint Paisios was baptized by Saint Arsenios and received his name. The Bishop stressed that “the sanctity of one became the seed that blossomed in the soul of the other.” Through his humility and silence, Saint Arsenios planted a spiritual seed that flourished later in the life and teachings of Saint Paisios, the patron saint of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia.
“In a world that seeks instant results and success,” the Bishop noted, “Saint Arsenios reminds us that the grace of God often works quietly beneath the soil of humility until the fruit of holiness begins to appear.”
