In response to the devastating floods that struck Kerr County, Texas, particularly along the Guadalupe River, Metropolitan Constantine of Denver has issued a heartfelt letter to the faithful of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver, calling for prayerful solidarity and urgent relief efforts.
“The devastation that has taken place at Camp Mystic, along with many other souls along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County, Texas, is shocking and tragic,” wrote Metropolitan Constantine. “The difficulty in imagining such a natural tragedy is unimaginable.”
The floods have caused widespread destruction, with homes swept away, lives disrupted, and the region left grappling with immense recovery needs. Camp Mystic, a beloved Christian camp familiar to many in the Orthodox community, was among the hardest-hit locations. It has long served as a place for youth camps, retreats, scouting events, and spiritual gatherings.
“Camp Mystic has been used by several of our faithful in that region. It is a very familiar Christian Camp that has hosted many camps, retreats, and other gatherings for young people for scouting and camping programs,” the Metropolitan emphasized.
In light of the overwhelming need, Metropolitan Constantine is urging every parish in the Metropolis to actively contribute: “I am asking you and your parishes to either pass a tray, offer a special collection, bake sale — whatever can be done to raise funds to help with basic and immediate expenses, including: sustaining the first responders, funeral expenses and more.”
He added that the Metropolis is working closely with neighboring parishes, local partners, and the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) to coordinate effective aid. A Metropolis response team is also identifying trusted entities on the ground to ensure that all collected donations go directly to relief efforts in the affected areas.
Faithful are encouraged to send donations to the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver with the memo line marked “Hill Country Relief” by August 1, 2025.
“The insurmountable task for this region is daunting, and the first responders, family members, and all involved are doing their absolute best in this situation,” he noted.
“The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver is a part of the greater community throughout this region and will respond prayerfully with support and the Love of God.”
The letter closes with words of appreciation and encouragement: “I thank you in advance for your prayers, your support, and your love.”
As Texas continues its recovery from this natural disaster, the Church stands united in faith, prayer, and compassionate action.
