On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, under the presidency of Patriarch Daniel of Romania, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Patriarchate convened at the Patriarchal Palace in Bucharest.
The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church elected Archimandrite Nectarie Clinci, abbot of Sihăstria Putnei Monastery, as Assistant Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chișinău on Wednesday evening.
The newly appointed bishop will bear the title “His Grace Bishop Nectarie of Bogdania, Assistant Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chișinău.”
With his election, the Metropolis of Bessarabia will now include four hierarchs within its structure.
The Synod’s deliberations continued on Thursday, February 6, during which the following decisions were made:
- Bishop Petroniu of Sălaj was suspended from office, following a decision by the Metropolitan Synod of the Metropolis of Cluj. The Holy Synod approved the organization of elections for his successor in an upcoming session. Until a new bishop is elected, Metropolitan Andrei of Cluj will temporarily oversee the administration of the diocese.
- Ecclesiastical penalties were imposed on individuals who violated canonical and statutory discipline. The Holy Synod also reaffirmed the neutrality of the Romanian Orthodox Church in political affairs and electoral campaigns, emphasizing the obligation of all hierarchs, clergy, and monastics to adhere to these synodal directives.
- As an exception, the elected Archbishop of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Atanasie, was granted temporary permission to exercise his duties until his enthronement. However, he will not have the right to sign official documents or represent the Church before British and Romanian authorities until the enthronement process is completed.
