On Saturday, May 17, Archbishop Makarios of Australia arrived in the city of Darwin to preside over the foundation stone laying ceremony for a new Greek Orthodox church, which will be dedicated to Saint Savvas the New of Kalymnos.
Upon his arrival at Darwin Airport, the Archbishop received a warm welcome from Bishop Silouan of Adelaide, a delegation from the local Parliament and the Protocol Office, the city’s Greek-Australian Mayor Kon Vatskalis, the Parish Priest of Saint Nicholas Church, Archimandrite Joel Xanthos, along with the President and members of the local Greek Community.
Also present was a delegation from the newly established parish, led by Parish Priest Fr. Christos Tsoraklidis, with a strong presence of youth and children dressed in traditional Greek attire.
During his stay in Australia’s Northern Territory, the Archbishop is scheduled to hold meetings with State Authorities and key figures of the Greek Diaspora.
It is worth noting that approximately 15,000 members of the Greek community reside in Darwin, the majority of whom originate from the island of Kalymnos.
