This year’s meetings of the Catechetical Work of the Holy Metropolis of Derkoi have once again come to a close.
Throughout the year, students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of our faith and ecclesiastical tradition through catechetical lessons and various activities.
Highlights included the Christmas theatrical performance, which was attended by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the Mayor of Makrochori, Ayşegül Ovalıoğlu.
The students also took part in an educational trip to Thrace, where they stayed at the Holy Metropolis of Alexandroupolis’s camps. There, they had the opportunity to become closely acquainted with the region’s history and traditions and visit its churches and monasteries.
During Holy and Great Lent, a series of activities focusing on Easter customs and traditions was organised to give the children a deeper understanding of the most important Orthodox celebration. The students participated reverently in the sacred services of Holy Week, and also attended the Paschal gathering of the Holy Metropolis in Therapia. In addition, there were birthday celebrations, film screenings, and many other events, which offered joy, creativity, and a collaborative spirit.
The closing ceremony took place amid great enthusiasm and emotion. The students enjoyed an entertaining programme, took part in games and recreational activities, and brought the year to a fitting conclusion.
At the end of the event, Metropolitan Apostolos of Derkoi expressed his paternal love for the children. He awarded them all certificates of praise for participating in the catechetical classes and thanked the catechists, Archdeacon Daniel of the Metropolis and his wife Efstathia Manias, the Philoptochos Brotherhood of Makrochori, and the children’s parents for their contributions to another successful and fruitful catechetical year. He also wished them all a blessed and joyful summer.
