Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox Church will postpone the reopening of its churches in Cairo and Alexandria until mid-July due to “high rates of infection,” as reported in an announcement, despite the government’s decision to allow today the reopening of places of worship.
In other regions, the local archbishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church will be responsible to assess the situation and decide whether to further delay the opening of churches or allow their reopening from now on. The decision was made at the meeting of the Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church headed by Pope Tawadros II.
Christians in Egypt represent around 12 percent of the country’s 100 million population with the vast majority of Christians in Egypt pertaining to the Coptic Orthodox Church.
