The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece has expressed its profound sorrow over the devastating wildfires currently affecting several parts of the country, while pledging its support for those impacted by the fires.
Metropolitan Bartholomew of Polyani and Kilkis, spokesperson for the Standing Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, issued a statement on Friday regarding the ongoing wildfire crisis.
“The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece expresses its profound sorrow over the devastating fires affecting various regions of our homeland, as well as its solidarity with our brothers and sisters who have been affected by the fires,” the statement said.
The Holy Synod also expressed its sincere condolences and prayerful support to the families of the three firefighters who lost their lives while battling the blazes.
At the same time, it offered prayers for the members of the Fire Service who continue to fight the fires, praising their self-sacrifice in protecting human life and the natural environment.
Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece has been in contact with the Metropolitans of the fire-stricken regions and conveyed the Church’s readiness to assist those affected.
According to the statement, the Church of Greece intends to provide “every possible spiritual, humanitarian and material support” to help alleviate the suffering of people and communities impacted by the fires.
Concluding its statement, the Holy Synod said it was praying to God for the fires to be brought under control, for strength for all those engaged in firefighting operations, and for the swift recovery of the affected areas.
