The process for submitting candidacies for the vacant Metropolitan Throne of Paphos was completed yesterday, May 25, 2026, with attention now turning to today’s session of the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus.
Among those who submitted candidacies are Archimandrite Ioannis, Abbot of the Stavropegial Monastery of Apostle Barnabas; Archimandrite Sophronios of the Monastery of Panagia Trooditissa; Bishop Porphyrios; and Archimandrite Grigorios Ioannidis, Protosyncellus of the Metropolis of Tremithousa and Dean of the Theological School of the Church of Cyprus.
The Holy Synod is expected to approve the final list of candidates during its meeting, while the possibility of an immediate election of a new Metropolitan of Paphos has not been ruled out.
Meanwhile, former Metropolitan of Paphos Tychikos submitted a formal objection and strong protest to the Holy Synod regarding the procedure for the election of his successor.
In a letter addressed to the Synod, Tychikos claimed that sacred canons of the Church had been violated and called for the suspension of the voting process, as well as for a reconsideration of the proceedings that led to the judgment against him.
The developments come amid ongoing discussions within the Church of Cyprus regarding the future leadership of the historic Metropolis of Paphos.
