Today, the Church celebrates the memory of Prophet Elisha and Saint Metodius the Confessor, Archbishop of Constantinople.
Prophet Elisha was the son of Elisha was the son of Shaphat, a wealthy land-owner, and became the attendant and disciple of Elijah, according to the Old Testament. Elisha became Elijah’s close attendant and his successor in the prophetic office until Elijah was taken up into heaven. Elisha was also a wonder-worker.
Elisha died during the reign of King Jehoash. The people of Israel came to mourn over his departure and buried him in Samaria.
