The Orthodox Church of Albania commemorated the 12th anniversary of the consecration of the Resurrection of Christ Cathedral in Tirana on June 1, 2026. The cathedral, one of the most remarkable Orthodox landmarks in the country, was inaugurated on June 1, 2014, and stands as a lasting legacy of the late Archbishop Anastasios of Albania, who personally contributed to its architectural design and vision.
The Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Bishop Ignatius of Amantia, with Archbishop John prayerfully present, and concelebrated by clergy of the Archdiocese of Albania.
In his homily, Bishop Ignatius paid tribute to the late Archbishop Anastasios, describing him as “the architect of the revival of the Church in Albania.” He noted that through the Archbishop’s sacrifices, tireless efforts, and extraordinary ministry, the Orthodox Church was rebuilt after decades of persecution and state-imposed atheism.
“This cathedral is the fruit of a great vision, prayers, and monumental labor,” Bishop Ignatius said. “It is not only the spiritual center of Orthodox Christians in Albania, but also an open door for all people.”
The Bishop also emphasized the importance of the Holy Spirit in the life of every Christian, explaining that just as breathing is essential for physical life, the grace of the Holy Spirit is indispensable for spiritual life.
Following the Divine Liturgy, a memorial service (Trisagion) was held with gratitude and emotion at the tomb of the late Archbishop Anastasios, which is located within the cathedral complex. Clergy and faithful offered prayers in remembrance of the hierarch whose vision and dedication transformed the Orthodox Church in Albania and left an enduring spiritual legacy for future generations.
