On December 5, 2023, the Patriarchal Monastery in Alexandria joyfully commemorated the feast of Saint Savvas the Sanctified, with Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa presiding over the Orthros and Divine Liturgy.
Joining the Patriarch in the concelebration were Metropolitans Panteleimon of Ptolemaida, Chief Secretary and Member of the Holy and Sacred Synod; Narcissus of Pelusium, Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria; and Germanos of Tamiatheus, the Hierarchical Head and spiritual guide of the historic monastery.
Metropolitan Panteleimon of Ptolemaida delivered the homily, reflecting on the Gospel reading of the day and connecting it to the virtuous and holy life of Saint Savvas. His sermon highlighted the practical applications of the saint’s teachings, offering the congregation spiritual inspiration.
In response, Patriarch Theodore II expressed his gratitude for the Metropolitan’s heartfelt and pastoral words, noting their depth and connection to the missionary and pastoral struggles of the Church. Addressing the faithful of Alexandria, he invoked Saint Savvas as a source of enduring consolation, blessing, and strength for believers, especially those whose faith faces trials. The Patriarch also extended his thanks to Metropolitans Narcissus and Germanos for their dedicated service to the flock of Alexandria.
Following the Divine Liturgy, Patriarch Theodore II led a prayer for the repose of his predecessor and spiritual father, Parthenios III, a figure of lasting influence and legacy within the Church.
The day concluded with a festive reception at the monastery’s “Archontariki” (guest quarters), where members of the community and visiting pilgrims gathered to celebrate the feast and share in fellowship.
