Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu does not miss the opportunity to make provocative statements against Greece, especially when they are combined with “anniversaries” celebrated by Turkey.
This time, on the occasion of the anniversary of Smyrna, the Turkish Foreign Minister speaks of “Greek cruelty”, while he does not hide his annoyance about Athens’ alliances against the Turkish provocations in the Eastern Mediterranean.
“Like today, 98 years ago, not only Smyrna was saved from Greek cruelty, but the whole of Anatolia. Greece was sentenced to compensations. And then those who trusted others ended up disappointed. We first honor Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the witnesses and veterans of our Independence War,” Çavuşoğlu wrote on Twitter.
98 yıl önce bugün sadece #İzmir değil tüm Anadolu Yunan zulmünden kurtuldu. #Yunanistan tazminata mahkum oldu. O zaman da başkalarına güvenenlerin sonu hüsran oldu. Başta Gazi Mustafa Kemal #Atatürk, Kurtuluş Savaşımızın tüm şehit ve gazilerini saygı ve rahmetle anıyorum. ?? pic.twitter.com/lzNJfK1mwT

Turkish nationalists of Bahçeli in Smyrna
At the same time, Turkish nationalists, supporters of the Nationalist Movement party, marched in Smyrna today to challenge the status of the Dodecanese islands.
The march was announced by the president of the Nationalist Movement party and Erdogan’s government partner, Devlet Bahçeli, calling for the “liberation of the Dodecanese islands from the Greek yoke”.
The protesters demanded a review of the status of the Dodecanese islands, while the main organizer of the march warned Greece that “its stance from now on is the one that will determine whether we will lead to conflict in the region. The Greek government must come to its senses. Otherwise, the Turkish nation will not have the sin.”
