Bulgarian Patriarch Daniel received Nathaniel Copsey, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Bulgaria, today at the Synodal Palace. The meeting was also attended by Bishop Gerasim of Melnik, Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod.
During the discussion, Patriarch Daniel shared his impressions from his recent visit to the United Kingdom, including the consecration of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church “St. John of Rila” in London and his meetings with the Bulgarian community in the British capital. Ambassador Copsey expressed his admiration for the beauty of the newly consecrated church and recognized its significance for the spiritual care of the approximately 300,000 Orthodox Bulgarians living in the UK.
The British diplomat also highlighted the vital role of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in preserving national identity throughout history. In response, Patriarch Daniel emphasized the Church’s enduring mission, stating:
“The Bulgarian Orthodox Church has played a crucial role in shaping and preserving our national identity. However, it also holds an important place in contemporary society. It serves as a spiritual foundation for our people, bearing witness to eternal values, the meaning of human life, and the promise of eternal life in God.”
The conversation also touched upon various challenges facing modern European society and explored opportunities for cooperation in overcoming the global crises of our time.
As a token of appreciation, the Patriarch presented Ambassador Copsey with a commemorative coin marking the 100th anniversary of the consecration of the Patriarchal Cathedral of “St. Alexander Nevsky,” as well as a special album dedicated to the Rila Monastery.
