With the blessing of Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria, Metropolitan Anthony of Western and Central Europe welcomed Nathaniel Copsey, the British Ambassador to Bulgaria, for an official meeting at the Synodal Palace.
The meeting covered a range of topics, including cooperation and initiatives between Bulgaria and the United Kingdom, as well as pressing global challenges such as military conflicts, insecurity, and aggression. “In times of conflict and war, we must serve as bearers of peace,” said Metropolitan Anthony, emphasizing the mission of the Orthodox Church to preach and pray for the establishment of peace and love throughout the world, while expressing hope for an end to global military conflicts. He also gave an update on the construction of the Bulgarian Church in London, which is scheduled to be consecrated in 2025.
Nathaniel Copsey, who took office in August this year, expressed his admiration for Bulgaria, saying, “It is an honor and a privilege to be in your country. He expressed his deep respect for Bulgarian traditions, language and culture.
Also present at the meeting were Bishop Gerasimos of Melnik, Secretary General of the Holy Synod, and Julianna Gurova, responsible for external relations for the Diocese of Western and Central Europe. On behalf of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Anthony presented Ambassador Copsey with a commemorative coin issued on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the consecration of the Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky.
The reception concluded with warm wishes for a joyous Christmas and the hope that 2025 will bring progress not only for Bulgaria and the United Kingdom but for the world at large. Both sides expressed their desire for greater cooperation between the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the British Embassy, as well as for the continued strengthening of the Bulgarian community in the United Kingdom.
