Bishop Timotheos of Assos expressed gratitude to God and offered a message of support following the devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia, causing extensive destruction and significant loss of life.
In a social media post issued on behalf of the Holy Metropolis of Mexico, Metropolitan Iakovos, the clergy, and the Metropolitan District of Colombia and Venezuela, Bishop Timotheos referred to the scale of the disaster and the difficult circumstances facing affected communities.
According to the Bishop, more than 5,000 homes have been destroyed across four different areas.
“Glory to God, who protects us and gives us courage to face this difficult time we are experiencing,” Bishop Timotheos said.
According to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), rescue teams and volunteers continue to search through the rubble for survivors following what has been described as Colombia’s strongest earthquake in a decade.
The latest preliminary death toll stands at at least 132, with more than 570 people injured. Dozens of buildings have also sustained severe damage or been completely destroyed.
Asocapitales, an organization representing Colombia’s largest cities and coordinating their response efforts, reported that the number of fatalities had risen to 132, while the number of injured exceeded 570.
The 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Chocó, an impoverished region on Colombia’s Pacific coast, leaving widespread destruction as rescue and recovery operations continue.
Greek Foreign Ministry expresses condolences over deadly earthquake in Colombia
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its deep sorrow over the loss of life caused by the devastating earthquake that struck Colombia.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry extended its sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, while expressing solidarity with those injured and all those affected by the disaster.
“Our thoughts are with the injured, all those affected, and the rescue teams working tirelessly on the ground,” the ministry said.
The statement also paid tribute to the emergency and rescue crews continuing their efforts in the affected areas.
US announces $15.5 million in aid to Colombia
Meanwhile, the United States announced on Monday that it would provide $15.5 million in assistance to Colombia following the powerful earthquake, which has claimed more than 100 lives, injured hundreds and caused extensive material damage.
The US State Department said the assistance would help provide earthquake survivors with tents, food and protective supplies, while also supporting assessments of the damage caused by the “devastating” earthquake.
