On Holy Monday evening, 6 April, Bishop Elpidios of Perth embarked on a 170km journey to the coastal city of Bunbury, situated south of Western Australia’s capital. His visit marked a significant occasion for the small Greek Orthodox community of St Nicholas Church, where he presided over the second Nymphios service of Holy Week.
Upon his arrival, Bishop Elpidios was warmly received by the faithful. In his address, Bishop Elpidios shared reflections on the significance of the Week of our Lord’s Passion, explaining why it is called “Great and Holy.” This sacred period, culminating in the celebration of the Resurrection, offers an opportunity for deep contemplation on Christ’s sacrificial love and His triumphant victory over death.
“Let us remember,” Bishop Elpidios said, “that this is not just another week in our calendar; this is the Week that changed the world. It is the pinnacle of our faith, the heart of our salvation.”
In his remarks, Bishop Elpidios extended a heartfelt invitation to the faithful to return to St Nicholas Church on Easter night to partake in the Paschal Divine Liturgy and to receive the Body and Blood of the Risen Christ.
Bishop Elpidios also took the opportunity to express gratitude to Archimandrite Kosmas Damianidis, who had generously agreed to lead all the Holy Week services at St Nicholas Church. “Father Kosmas, we thank you for your dedication and love for this parish,” Bishop Elpidios said, acknowledging his tireless efforts in serving the community during this sacred time.
A particularly touching moment of the evening was the presence of two young families, who brought their children to the service. This display of faith and devotion moved His Grace deeply. “It brings me great joy to see the next generation of Orthodox Christians here with us tonight,” he remarked. “To witness young families coming together to worship and bring their children into the Church is truly a blessing.”
As the service came to a close, Bishop Elpidios conveyed his warmest wishes for a blessed Pascha to the entire community on behalf of Archbishop Makarios of Australia. “May you all experience a blessed and holy Pascha,” he said, offering prayers for the spiritual well-being of the faithful.
As Bishop Elpidios returned to Perth, the community of Bunbury was left with a renewed sense of purpose and anticipation, eagerly awaiting the celebration of Pascha and the joyous resurrection of our Lord.
