On the Sunday of the Blind Man, May 17, 2026, Bishop Maximos of Melitene presided over the Divine Liturgy at the Church of Saint Charalambos in Luton.
Concelebrating with the bishop were the parish priest Fr. David Somalis and Archdeacon Fr. George Tsourous.
During his sermon, Bishop Maximos reflected on the Gospel reading of the day, emphasizing the importance of acquiring clear spiritual vision and recognizing the struggles of others. He noted that many people around us suffer from spiritual and physical weakness and are in urgent need of practical support and compassion.
The bishop also encouraged the faithful to remain spiritually vigilant and actively support the missionary work of the Orthodox Church in Africa, Oceania, the Far East, and Latin America. At the same time, he stressed the importance of cooperation with parish philanthropic organizations in assisting those in need.
Before the dismissal of the Divine Liturgy, Bishop Maximos ordained a new Reader serving in the parish choir. He also conveyed the paternal blessings of Nikitas of Thyateira to the faithful.
Following the service, the bishop blessed the foundation stone for the construction of a new parish residence next to the church. A festive meal was later offered to all worshippers in the parish hall, attended by representatives of the local authorities.
