Bishop Kyriakos of Melbourne welcomed Ms Georgia Dimopoulou, the newly appointed Head of the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO) in Australia, to the Offices of the Holy Diocese of Melbourne. She was accompanied by Ms Dimitra Georgantzioglou, Consul General of Greece in Melbourne.
At the opening of the meeting, Bishop Kyriakos conveyed the greetings, paternal blessings, and warm wishes of Archbishop Makarios of Australia. He expressed his joy at the continued strengthening of the relationship between the Church, the Greek community of Melbourne, and the official representatives of the Hellenic Republic. His Grace emphasised that, under the spiritual guidance of Archbishop Makarios, the Holy Diocese of Melbourne remains committed to fostering a spirit of cooperation that supports both the spiritual growth and cultural identity of the faithful.
The discussion that followed covered a wide range of topics—from the enduring spiritual and cultural ties connecting Greece with the Greek Orthodox community of Melbourne, to the crucial role of the Church in preserving the Greek language, traditions, and Orthodox Christian faith across generations.
Bishop Kyriakos highlighted that the collaboration between the Church, Greek governmental institutions, and community organisations ensures that the Greek presence in Melbourne remains dynamic, united, and spiritually enriched.
Ms Dimopoulou outlined the GNTO’s vision for expanding Greece’s presence in the Australian region, highlighting new opportunities in cultural and religious tourism, including pilgrimages to monasteries, heritage sites, and places of significant Orthodox tradition.
Consul General Georgantzioglou reaffirmed the Consulate’s commitment to supporting the Greek population of Melbourne, encouraging cultural initiatives, and strengthening the bridge that connects Greece with a city often described as the “second capital” of the Greek world due to its vibrant Greek Orthodox identity and flourishing diaspora.
The meeting concluded with a shared sense of optimism and a common vision for the collaborative initiatives planned for 2026. All parties expressed enthusiasm for future partnerships that will uplift the faithful, enrich Greek cultural presence in Melbourne, and honor the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Greek Orthodox tradition.
