On Sunday, January 18, 2026, Bishop Iakovos of Claudiopolis presided at the Divine Liturgy on the Patronal Feast of St Athanasius Greek Orthodox Church in Cambridge.
Archimandrite Theophanis Petrou and Presbyters Gregory Craveiro and Gregory Florides concelebrated with Bishop Iakovos of Claudiopolis on this joyous day in the life of the community.
Bishop Iakovos conveyed Archbishop Nikitas’ paternal greetings and blessings to the diverse and growing congregation. Bishop Iakovos offered words of encouragement and gratitude to both Fr Gregory, Priest-in-charge, and Mr Evangelos Assimakos, Chairman of the Community, for their ministry and dedication to the spiritual life and organisation of the church.
Fr Gregory Florides preached the sermon in Greek and English, highlighting the important virtues of gratitude and doxology within the life of an Orthodox Christian, seen in the example of the Samaritan Leper. (Lk 17:11-19) Fr Gregory linked the Gospel reading with the teachings of St Athanasius the Great, emphasising that healing, miracles, transformation, and salvation are only possible through the Lord’s incarnation, assuming human nature and manifesting Himself amongst us as both God and human.
The Hierarchical Liturgy was followed by a gracious meal and fellowship in the community’s hall.
