On Sunday, July 7, Bishop Kyrill of Buenos Aires and South Central America, who also serves as the locum tenens of the Metropolis of Zagreb and Ljubljana, delivered a sermon at the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Zagreb.
In his sermon, Bishop Kyrill spoke on the issue of abortion, emphasizing the Church’s teaching on the sanctity of life from conception. He began by referencing the three feasts of the Nativity honored by the Church: the Nativity of Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, and John the Forerunner. He noted that the Church also particularly celebrates the Conception of Saint John and the Most Holy Theotokos to affirm that life begins at conception.
“The Church also celebrates the Conception of Saint John and the Most Holy Theotokos to testify that life begins from conception in the womb of the mother, and not, as many today calculate, from when a child in the mother’s womb can be considered complete,” he said. “All these people are trying to appease their conscience about the murders that take place in the womb of the abortion mother,” he added.
Bishop Kyrill further emphasized, “The Holy Church is clear: the life of the child begins from its conception, and from that moment, it is a full member of society. ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near’ – these are the prophetic words of Saint John. John the Baptist could not solve the problems arising from our fallen nature, which is subject to death and decay. Even with all the technology and medicine available to human beings today, the problem of death cannot be solved. That is why we should accept the invitation of Saint John the Baptist to calm down, realize our weakness before God, confess our sins with repentance, and prepare for the coming of the One who is the only one who can solve our problems.”
Bishop Kyrill concluded his sermon by urging the faithful to embrace repentance and prepare for the coming of Christ, who alone can address the fundamental issues of human existence.
